Readings: Is 25:6-10A; Ps 23; Mt 15:29-37.
Don't you think that it must sound really great! God will provide a feast for us. Imagine only what a feast it will be, if God Himself is going to prepare it. As the prophet says it will be "a feast of fat things, a feast of choice wines - of fat things full of marrow, of choice wines well refined" (Is 25:6). What a divine banquet! Who wouldn't want to be invited, given that this isn't even the end? Because God is going to do much more. He "will swallow up death forever" and "will wipe away tears from all faces" (Is 25:8). Yes, a lovely picture of the future life ... but perhaps without any connection with this life.
But that isn't true. God isn't far away. He is closer than you can imagine. All that you really need to do is just to come to Him. He is waiting... "I have compassion" (Mt 15:32). Don't be afraid, come! He doesn't have a diary, so you don't need to have made an appointment in advance. He always waits for you. He waits especially in the Eucharist. Come and don't worry, because He knows that sometimes you "have nothing to eat" (Mt 15:32).
God doesn't want to send us away hungry (cf. Mt 15:32). He gives us food to nourish us. It isn't your ordinary bread, the sort that can't fulfill your deepest hunger. The bread He gives is lest we collapse on the way. So how can we get to the house of the Lord where we shall dwell for ever (cf. Ps 23:6)? We can be nourished only by Him, so ... He comes to us and spreads the table (cf. Ps 23:5) to give us refreshment.
"Behold, this our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation" (Is 25:9).
