The second from the top is, regrettably, no joke - the world had eight years of Jesus-the-rootin'-tootin'-shootin'-all-American-son-of-a-gun under George W Bush. St Thomas was admamantly opposed to bad arguments that brought the Faith into disrepute. Is their something analogous about bad governments that wear their 'Christianity' on their sleeve?
Blair managed to be even worse - he took after Bush in all the wrong things (war, 'self-regulation' for the financial markets, pandering to the rich) and refused to stand up for Chrisian principles in the few areas of social policy (abortion, stem-cell research) that Bush got right.
