Catholic Herald Film Poll

Some of the student brothers have commented on the Catholic Herald’s reader poll of the top 100 films. One of featured films is Into Great Silence which was reviewed by Br. Lawrence here.

  1. As an entirely trivial comment, I am delighted to see that 'Bells of S. Mary's' gets in - a lovely version of 'O Sanctissima' in that one - and also 'The Cardinal', which as far as I'm concerned deserves some praise for being a film mainly about the Church, but without (so far as I can see) a single liturgical or vestural mistake.

  2. I have to agree with "The Cardinal". It shows how the Church had to deal with the major changes of the 20th century in a very human and honest way. I always find its depiction of the growing moral relativism in the medical profession as terribly prophetic.

  3. fr Mark;
    although it's straying from the topic of films, may I say that I think that your comment about the moral relativism of the medical profession is all too true ?

    At the same time - returning to the topic for a moment - for me that is one of the less good bits of the film, because there is such power in the book on that issue, which the film can't capture because so much of it is 'undercurrent'.

    It's also worth remembering that the book, at least, made it very clear that there is NO dichotomy between the Church and Medicine/Medical Ethics - at least, not as far as Dr John Byrne was concerned . . . a lesson which I think some contemporary doctors might do well to grasp.
